When I was 10 years old someone gave me a paint-by-numbers kit. It was a picture of an old mill with a waterwheel. I attacked it with enthusiasm and when it was finished I was horrified. Here was the ugliest “painting” I had ever seen, and I knew in my heart it was not my execution, it was the entire concept of paint-by-numbers. Like bad cooking, there was no love in it… Paintings |
For many years, Rapidograph, which is a technical pen, ran advertisements in popular artists magazines that showed how artists used their pens to produce highly detailed and realistic drawings. When my life changed in such a way that I no longer could paint I turned to ink drawing. I was inspired by a book called The Technical Pen by Gary Simmons. It was an 8×10 inch paperback that cost about $20. This book is unbelievably inspiring for anyone who loves to draw… Ink Drawings |
While surfing art sites on the web a couple of years agon I encountered a few showing “graphite” drawings. The drawings these artists produced were virtually indistinguishable from photographs but I thought that “graphite” was a pretentious way of referring to a pencil. Still, I was intrigued and soon found out that making one of these drawings has technical challenges far beyond drawing lines with a pencil… Graphite Drawings |
If you search Google for “colored pencil paintings” you’ll find many images that are indistinguishable from oil paintings. So I challenged myself to learn to “paint” with colored pencils, completely unaware that it would be a real challenge to learn the techniques and different combinations of pencils and surfaces. I am still learning… Color Pencil Paintings |
A few years ago I became interested in 3D modeling and animation and decided to learn about it. The first thing I learned is why, when you watch the credits of a CGI movie, you see so very many names (and sometimes several contractors) listed for the 3D effects. But rather than being overwhelmed I felt even more challenged. So far, I’ve managed to learn a bit about modelling and rendering still images, but I’ve so much more to go… 3D Modeling |
